STATE AND PROSPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT OF CENTRALIZED DRINKING WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS IN THE REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN

There are currently more than 720 centralized water supply systems on the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan. 103 are municipal, while the remaining 619 are departmental. In 78%, the sources are underground water horizons, in 22% – surface water bodies: rivers, springs and canals.

On average, the country provides about 60% of the population with water from centralized water supply systems for house­hold needs, including 96% in cities and urban-type settlements and 40% in rural areas. The rest of the population uses water from sources that are dangerous in sanitary and epidemiological terms.

In order to achieve the water and sanitation targets provided in the «Millennium Development Goals», the Government of Tajikistan approved the Program to improve the provision of drinking water for the population for the period 2008-2020.
